WoW Forever Class Highlights Part 2: Hunter, Mage and Paladin changes, checked

Hunter, Mage and Paladin talent tree paintings from the WoW Forever client

· ForeverDB

Blizzard's second Class Highlights video covers Forever's Hunter, Mage and Paladin changes: Aimed Shot, Sniper Shot, the Fox, traps in combat, Ice Lance, Frostfire Bolt, Arcane Blast, Seal of Fury, Templar's Bulwark, Light's Vigil and more. We checked every one against the beta client. Most match, but Winter's Chill doesn't boost Frostfire Bolt crits, Hot Streak is called Heating Up and counts only four spells, Expose Prey needs Hunter's Mark, and Seal of Fury's shield needs a shield. We also list what the video skipped, class by class.

Official. Everything under "Blizzard says" is from Blizzard's own video on the World of Warcraft YouTube channel. The numbers are from the Forever beta client (build 1.60.1.70205), the game's own data. Where the two differ, we say so. The beta is capped at level 30, so talents up to tier 5 can be played now; tier 6 and 7 talents (levels 35 and 40) and Frostfire Bolt (level 40) can't yet.

On 3 October Blizzard posted Class Highlights - Part 2, a 6:56 video on the official World of Warcraft channel about what changes when you play a Hunter, Mage or Paladin in World of Warcraft: Forever. It follows Part 1: Warrior, Shaman and Rogue, and Blizzard says Part 3 covers Priests, Warlocks and Druids. Below, every ability and talent the video names is checked against the beta client, with its real numbers, the level you get it at and a link to its page. The last section, What the video didn't mention, lists the other changes the client has for these three classes.

Class Highlights - Part 2: Hunter, Mage, Paladin | World of Warcraft: Forever (World of Warcraft on YouTube)
Blizzard's video, 3 October 2026. Part 3 (Priest, Warlock, Druid) is next.

The short version

  • Most of what Blizzard names is in the client, and the client adds the numbers: Aimed Shot has a 2 sec cast instead of 3, Careful Aim turns up to 100% of your Intellect into Attack Power, Lone Wolf adds 20% damage without a pet, Templar's Bulwark absorbs damage equal to 100% of your maximum health for 8 sec, and Blessings last 1 hour.
  • Winter's Chill doesn't help Frostfire Bolt crit. The video lists it among the Frost talents that strengthen Frostfire Bolt, but in the client its critical strike bonus is only for "your Ice Lance and Frostbolt spells".
  • "Hot Streak" is called Heating Up in the talent tree, and only non-periodic crits from Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch count, not every Fire spell. The 25% faster Pyroblast, stacking 3 times, matches.
  • "Exposed Prey" is Expose Prey, and it only works on targets with your Hunter's Mark: a 5% or 10% chance to let you use Mongoose Bite without a dodge. The bleed comes from a separate talent at level 40.
  • Traps in combat are for every Hunter, not only Survival: the trap spells all Hunters learn lost the out-of-combat rule. Their cooldowns doubled to 30 sec.
  • Seal of Fury's shield needs a shield. Seal of Fury adds Holy damage to every attack, but the absorb shield comes only "While a shield is equipped". Its Judgement taunts, as the video says.
  • Two claims can't be checked in the files: whether Aimed Shot still resets Auto Shot, and how much your armour adds to your pet. Both are worked out by the game's servers.
  • What you can use in the beta now (level 30): the new Aimed Shot, traps in combat, Careful Aim, Lone Wolf, Strider Kick, Expose Prey, Ice Lance, Fingers of Frost, Arcane Blast, Heating Up, Seal of Fury, Consecration, Swift Judgement, Templar's Bulwark, Holy Strike and the 1 hour Blessings. Sniper Shot, Frostfire Bolt, Light's Vigil and Twist of Light come at level 40.
  • The video skips a lot. The client also has new talents such as Improved Stings, Rapid Killing, Missile Barrage, Reverence and Sanctified Judgement, a reworked Survival tree and weaker low-rank Frostbolt and Fire Blast damage with higher spell power coefficients. They're all in the last section, class by class.

Hunter

Every Hunter talent below is on the Hunter talent calculator, and every Hunter change is listed on Hunter changes. Guides and builds: Hunter. Pets: Hunter pets. DPS simulations: Beast Mastery, Marksmanship and Survival.

Aimed Shot for every spec

For Hunters, every spec is getting an improved Aimed Shot with a shorter cast time. Casting Aimed Shot also no longer interferes with the Auto Shot timer. Blizzard, Class Highlights - Part 2 (0:21)
  • Aimed Shot for every spec: confirmed. In Classic Era it was a Marksmanship talent. In Forever every Hunter learns it from the trainer at level 20, with ranks up to level 60.
  • Shorter cast: confirmed. 2 sec instead of 3, on every rank. The bonus damage is much lower to make up for it: rank 1 adds 20 (Classic Era 70) and the top rank 166 (Classic Era 600). The cooldown is still 6 sec, and the tooltip adds "Aimed Shot shares its cooldown with Multi-Shot".
  • Auto Shot timer: can't check yet. Whether a cast resets your Auto Shot swing is handled by the game's servers, not stored in the client. We'll test it in game.
  • Barrage (Marksmanship tier 5, level 30) now adds 10% to Aimed Shot too, not only Multi-Shot and Volley.

Marksmanship: Sniper Shot, Careful Aim and Lone Wolf

  • Sniper Shot: the Marksmanship tree's tier 7 talent (level 40, above the cap), after Trueshot Aura. Rank 1 is "A long-range shot that deals ranged damage plus 160 and increases the range of your next 3 Shots by 10 yards for 10 sec." It has a 4 sec cast, a 15 sec cooldown, a 45 yard range and costs 365 mana. That's the "high commit, high damage attack" the video describes.
  • Careful Aim: new, Marksmanship tier 2 (level 15), 5 ranks: Attack Power equal to 20% of your Intellect per rank, up to 100% at 5/5. Classic Era had nothing like it.
  • Lone Wolf: new, Marksmanship tier 3 (level 20), 1 rank: "You deal 20% increased damage with all attacks while you do not have an active pet." It began as a Season of Discovery rune.
  • Both sit in tiers 2 and 3, as the video says, so a hybrid build can take them with 15 points or fewer in Marksmanship. You can use both in the beta now.

Beast Mastery: the Fox, and pets that share your armour

  • The Fox: confirmed. The client has a new Fox pet family. Its own ability is Trickster's Dance: "Increases your pet's chance to Dodge by 50% and decreases the time between your pet's attacks by 30% for 12 sec", 3 min cooldown, 10 Focus, learned at level 20. Like the other families it also gets Bite and Dash.
  • The only tameable Fox our data lists so far is Vuldren, a level 6 beast on Zephras Isle, the Skyborne starting zone. Nothing in the client ties the Fox to Beast Mastery: any Hunter who can reach it should be able to tame it.
  • Pet stats from your armour: can't check yet. How much a pet gets from its Hunter is worked out by the game's servers. The client has no number for it.

Survival: Strider Kick, Expose Prey and traps

  • Strider Kick: confirmed. Survival tier 5 (level 30), 1 rank. Tier 5 needs 20 points in the tree, so it's your 21st point at the earliest, as the video says. "A powerful kick that deals 100% melee weapon damage and increases movement speed by 30% for 3 sec", instant, 8 sec cooldown, melee weapon needed. You can take it in the beta now.
  • Expose Prey: the video says "Exposed Prey"; the client's name is Expose Prey. Survival tier 5 (level 30), 2 ranks: "Your attacks against targets with Hunter's Mark have a 10% chance to activate your Mongoose Bite for 5 sec" at 2/2 (5% at 1/2). So Mongoose Bite no longer needs a dodge, but only on a target with your Hunter's Mark.
  • Bleeds: Mongoose Bite itself doesn't do more against bleeding targets. The bleed comes from Lacerating Strikes, the Survival tier 7 talent (level 40, above the cap, after 2/2 Expose Prey): Mongoose Bite also makes the target bleed for 40% of its damage over 21 sec. Mongoose Bite now deals melee weapon damage plus 15 at rank 1 (Classic Era: 25 damage) and needs a melee weapon. Forever also teaches a bleed, Lacerate, at level 30: 119 damage over 21 sec.
Survival Hunters can now place traps during combat, turning them into reactive tools rather than just preparation. Blizzard, Class Highlights - Part 2 (1:37)

The client agrees, for every Hunter. The tooltips of Immolation Trap (level 16), Freezing Trap (level 20), Frost Trap (level 28) and Explosive Trap (level 34) no longer say "Traps can only be placed when out of combat", and the spell data no longer carries the flag that blocked them in combat in Classic Era. These are trainer spells for every Hunter, not Survival talents. Two catches: every trap now has a 30 sec cooldown (Classic Era 15 sec), and the limit is per kind: "Only one Fire trap can be active at a time", and the same for Frost traps.

Mage

Mage talents: Mage talent calculator. Every change: Mage changes. Guides: Mage. Simulations: Arcane, Fire and Frost.

Frost: Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost

  • Ice Lance: a Frost talent, tier 3 (level 20), 1 rank, so you can take it in the beta now. Rank 1: instant, 30 yards, 45 mana, "Deals 26 to 30 Frost damage to an enemy target. Deals 300% increased damage to Frozen targets." Five more ranks come from level 28 to level 56. Classic Era Mages had no Ice Lance; it began as a Season of Discovery rune.
  • Fingers of Frost: Frost tier 5 (level 30), 2 ranks, and it needs Ice Lance. "Gives your Chill effects a 15% chance to grant you the Fingers of Frost effect, which treats your next 2 spells cast as if the target were Frozen" at 2/2 (1 spell at 1/2), for 15 sec. That's the follow-up the video means: Ice Lance's 300% bonus works on a target that's only treated as Frozen. Both are within the level 30 cap.

Frostfire Bolt and the hybrid talents

Frostfire Bolt now counts as both fire and frost damage, allowing talents from both trees to support the same central spell. Blizzard, Class Highlights - Part 2 (2:06)

Frostfire Bolt is a trainer spell every Mage learns at level 40, not a talent (ranks 2 and 3 at levels 50 and 60). Rank 1: 3 sec cast, 35 yards, 205 mana, 92 to 108 Frostfire damage, a 40% slow and 27 more damage over 9 sec. Its tooltip says what the video says: "This spell will be checked against the lower of the target's Frost and Fire resists and counts as both Frost and Fire damage." Level 40 is above the beta's cap, so nobody can test it yet. Here is what each talent the video names says in the client:

  • Fire talents that name it: Improved Fireball (tier 1) cuts the cast time of "your Fireball and Frostfire Bolt spells" by up to 0.5 sec, and Heating Up (tier 4, below) counts Frostfire Bolt crits.
  • Fire talents that cover all Fire spells or Fire damage: Ignite (tier 2: crits burn for 40% more over 4 sec), Flame Throwing (tier 2: 6 yards more range), Impact (tier 2: a 10% chance to stun for 2 sec), Burning Soul (tier 3: a 70% chance not to lose casting time), Improved Scorch (tier 4: Scorch makes the target take 3% more Fire damage from you, up to 5 times), Critical Mass (tier 5: 6% more critical strike chance), Fire Power (tier 6, level 35: 10% more damage; the client writes it as two words) and Combustion (tier 7, level 40).
  • Frost talents: Ice Shards (tier 2: Frost crits deal 100% more bonus damage), Piercing Ice (tier 3: 6% more Frost damage) and Frost Channeling (tier 3: Frost spells cost 15% less) work on Frost spells. Permafrost (tier 2: Chill effects last 33% longer) and Frostbite (tier 2: a 15% chance to Freeze for 5 sec) work on Chill effects, as Fingers of Frost does. The tooltip calls Frostfire Bolt's 40% slow "slowing movement speed", so whether it counts as a Chill is up to the servers.
  • Winter's Chill is the exception. Frostfire Bolt is a Frost damage spell, so it can apply the effect, but the effect raises the critical strike chance of "your Ice Lance and Frostbolt spells" only. In this build it doesn't help Frostfire Bolt crit.
  • Ignite and Ice Shards together: by their tooltips both apply to a Frostfire Bolt crit. How the server combines them can't be read from the files.

Arcane: Arcane Power and Arcane Blast

  • Arcane Power: Arcane tier 7 (level 40, above the cap): "For the next 15 sec, your spells deal 30% more damage while costing 30% more mana to cast." The same numbers as Classic Era.
  • Arcane Blast: an Arcane talent, tier 3 (level 20), 1 rank, so you can use it in the beta now. Rank 1: 2.5 sec cast, 15% of base mana, 50 to 58 Arcane damage. Each cast raises the damage of all your other spells by 10% and Arcane Blast's own cost by 175%, up to 4 times. Higher ranks come at levels 30, 40, 50 and 60.
  • The condition the video leaves out: the stacks last 8 sec "or until any other damage spell is cast". So the bonus goes into the next Fire or Frost spell you cast and then it's gone, which is the weaving the video describes. Improved Channeling now also gives Arcane Blast a 70% chance not to be interrupted by damage.

Fire: Hot Streak is Heating Up

Critical strikes with fire spells grant Hot Streak, making your Pyro Blast cast 25% faster. Blizzard, Class Highlights - Part 2 (3:32)

The talent in Forever's Fire tree is called Heating Up (tier 4, level 25, 1 rank, after Pyroblast), so it's within the beta's cap. The client's Season of Discovery rune that grants it is still called Hot Streak, which may be where the video's name comes from. Its text: "Non-periodic critical strikes with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast, and Scorch reduce the cast time of your next Pyroblast cast within 20 sec by 25%, stacking up to 3 times." The 25% and the 3 stacks match the video. The difference: only those four spells count, and only their direct damage, not every Fire spell (Flamestrike, Blast Wave and Pyroblast itself don't). Pyroblast is a Fire tier 3 talent (level 20) with a 6 sec cast; rank 1 deals 95 to 125 plus 44 over 12 sec (Classic Era 141 to 187, plus 56).

Paladin

Paladin talents: Paladin talent calculator. Every change: Paladin changes. Guides: Paladin. Simulation: Retribution.

Protection: Seal of Fury, a taunt at last

While Seal of Fury is active, every attack deals additional damage and grants the Paladin a small shield. Using Judgment while under the effects of Seal of Fury deals damage and taunts the target to attack you. Blizzard, Class Highlights - Part 2 (4:22)
  • Seal of Fury is a trainer spell every Paladin learns at level 10, with 7 ranks (levels 10, 18, 25, 34, 42, 50 and 58). Rank 1: 40 mana, lasts 30 sec, and "causing melee attacks to deal an additional 6 Holy damage" (35 at rank 7).
  • The shield needs a shield: "While a shield is equipped, each attack also grants an absorb shield equal to 50% of the Holy damage dealt." With a two-handed weapon you get the damage but no absorb.
  • The taunt: confirmed. Judging it (Judgement of Fury) "inflicts22 to 24 Holy damage to an enemy and taunts the target to attack you for 4 sec" at rank 1 (the missing space is the client's), and 146 to 160 at rank 7. Judgement has a 10 sec cooldown and now says "Does not consume the Seal", so you keep Seal of Fury up while you judge.
  • Mana: the video says mana was the Protection Paladin's problem. The client's answer includes Improved Seal of Fury (Protection tier 3, level 20), which restores mana each time Seal of Fury's shield is fully absorbed, more when the attacker is higher level than you.

Consecration, Swift Judgement and Templar's Bulwark

  • Consecration: every Paladin at level 20, confirmed. In Classic Era it was a Holy talent. Rank 1: 135 mana, 8 sec cooldown, "doing 16 Holy damage over 8 sec to enemies who enter the area. The first 4 enemies who enter the area will take an additional 32 damage over 8 sec." So the big damage is on the first 4, as the video says. Every enemy after that takes only the base part; Classic Era's rank 1 did 64 over 8 sec to all of them. More ranks at levels 30, 40, 50 and 60.
  • Swift Judgement: the client spells it Judgement. Protection tier 4 (level 25), 1 rank, after Improved Seal of Fury: "Finishes the remaining cooldown on your Judgement ability and reduces the Mana cost of your next Judgement by 100%." It has a 1 min cooldown of its own.
  • Templar's Bulwark: Protection tier 5 (level 30), in the slot Classic Era's Blessing of Sanctuary had. "When activated, this ability grants you an absorb shield equal to 100% of your maximum health for 8 sec." 5 min cooldown, 110 mana. It "Applies Forbearance for 1 min", like Divine Shield, Divine Protection and Blessing of Protection, so you can't chain them. All three talents are within the beta's level 30 cap.

Holy: Light's Vigil and Holy Shock

  • Light's Vigil: the Holy tree's tier 7 talent (level 40, above the cap), after Holy Shock. A 1.5 sec cast, 730 mana, 6 sec cooldown, lasting 30 sec on its target: "Your next Holy Shock cast on them triggers no cooldown and causes enemy targets to suffer 175 to 189 Holy damage and refund 75% of Light's Vigil's Mana cost, or allied targets to heal their party for 315 to 333." The party heal reaches members within 40 yards of the target.
  • Two details the video doesn't give: "You may only have one Light's Vigil active per party", and it works on enemies too.
  • Holy Shock itself moved from tier 7 to tier 5 (level 30, within the cap) and has a 10 sec cooldown (Classic Era 30 sec). Its new rank 1 deals 129 to 139 damage or heals 110 to 118 (Classic Era's rank 1: 204 to 220 either way).
Blessings, including Greater Blessings, now last an hour instead of five minutes. Blizzard, Class Highlights - Part 2 (5:33)

Confirmed in the client: every Blessing now lasts 1 hour, from Blessing of Might at level 4 to Blessing of Kings, which every Paladin now learns from the trainer at level 20 (in Classic Era it was a Protection talent). One small correction: in Classic Era the Greater Blessings lasted 15 min, not 5; Greater Blessing of Kings and the other Greater Blessings now last 1 hour too. Not in the video: Blessing of Might is weaker (rank 1 adds 14 attack power instead of 20; the top rank 133 instead of 185), and Blessing of Sanctuary is gone.

Retribution: Twist of Light and Holy Strike

  • Twist of Light: the Retribution tree's tier 7 talent (level 40, above the cap). "Reduces the Mana cost of your Seal spells by 20%, and when you replace your Seal of Command, Seal of Righteousness, Seal of Fury, or Seal of Justice with a different Seal, you gain an Echo of that Seal. Your next melee attack applies the replaced Seal's effects, consuming the Echo." The same four Seals as the video, plus the 20% cheaper Seals.
  • Holy Strike: the video brings it up under Retribution, but every Paladin learns it from the trainer at level 6. Rank 1: "An instant strike that causes 25% weapon damage plus an additional 10 to 14 as Holy damage", 10 sec cooldown, 5 mana, melee weapon needed. Rank 8 (level 60) deals 50% weapon damage plus 81 to 105.
  • Retribution makes it better with Sacred Arbiter (tier 4, level 25): 20% more Holy Strike damage, and it refreshes your Judgements on the target. Protection's Iron Creed (tier 6, level 35) makes it a threat tool, and Holy Power (Holy tier 6) adds 15% critical strike chance to it.

Where the client and Blizzard differ

  • Winter's Chill: Blizzard lists it among the talents that strengthen Frostfire Bolt; in the client its crit bonus is only for Ice Lance and Frostbolt.
  • Hot Streak: the talent is called Heating Up, and only direct crits from Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch count, not every Fire spell.
  • Exposed Prey: the name is Expose Prey, it only works on targets with your Hunter's Mark, and the bleed is a separate tier 7 talent, Lacerating Strikes.
  • Traps: Blizzard says Survival Hunters; the change is on the trap spells every Hunter learns. Their cooldowns also went from 15 sec to 30.
  • Seal of Fury: the absorb shield comes only while a shield is equipped.
  • Holy Strike: every Paladin learns it at level 6, not only Retribution.
  • Greater Blessings lasted 15 min in Classic Era, not 5. Both kinds now last 1 hour.
  • Frostfire Bolt is a trainer spell at level 40, not a talent.
  • Auto Shot and pet armour: not in the client, so not checked either way. We'll test them in game once we can.

Speculation. Blizzard's wording may describe a later build than the client we have (1.60.1.70205), and some talent effects are decided on the servers whatever the tooltip says. Winter's Chill and Heating Up are the two to watch: if a new build changes their tooltips, we'll update this article.

What the video didn't mention

The video picks a few highlights per spec. The client has many more changes for these three classes. Below are the ones that matter most to players, spec by spec, none of them named in the video. The numbers come from the Forever client, with Classic Era's in brackets for comparison. What you can use at the beta's level 30 cap comes first in each list, and anything higher is marked. Talent tiers open every 5 levels (tier 5 at 30, tier 6 at 35).

Hunter

Beast Mastery

  • Focused Fire (new, tier 2, level 15) makes you and your pet deal 2% more damage while your pet is active. It takes the slot of Classic Era's Improved Eyes of the Beast.
  • Summon Hawk (new, tier 4, level 25) sends a hawk to dive-bomb your target for 32 (+5% of ranged attack power) Physical damage, attacking for 18 sec; 2 hawks at most, and it shares its cooldown with Arcane Shot. Unleashed Fury (tier 3) now adds 15% damage to your pets and hawks (Classic Era 20% to pets).
  • Endurance Training (tier 1, level 10) now raises your pet's Armor as well as its Health, by 15% at 5/5. Thick Hide, which gave pets 30% more armour, is gone from the tree.
  • Improved Aspect of the Monkey (tier 2, level 15) has 3 ranks instead of 5, adds 6% Dodge to Aspect of the Monkey (Classic Era 5%), and your pet gets 50% of the effect.
  • Bestial Discipline (tier 5, level 30) now also lets 50% of your Mana regeneration continue while casting, on top of 20% more pet Focus regeneration.
  • Spirit Bond (tier 5, level 30) heals you and your pet for 1% of total health every 5 sec (Classic Era 2% every 10 sec).

Marksmanship

  • Improved Stings (new, tier 2, level 15): Serpent Sting deals 20% more damage, Viper Sting's cooldown is 6 sec shorter, and Scorpid Sting lasts 45 sec longer.
  • Rapid Killing (new, tier 3, level 20) cuts Rapid Fire's cooldown by 2 min, and a kill gives your next Shot within 20 sec 20% more damage.
