Blizzard's class deep dive covers the Mage and Shaman changes coming in WoW Forever, including the new Frostfire Bolt and easier totem handling. A follow-up corrected the Elemental Shaman section to add the removal of Elemental Mastery.

The Mage and Shaman deep dive

On 7 October Blizzard published the next entry in its class deep dive series, this time for Mage and Shaman. It explains how each class is being updated for WoW Forever while keeping the tools and playstyles players know. A few hours later Blizzard posted a short correction to the Shaman section, which we cover below.

These are beta changes. Blizzard says class abilities and talents may keep changing through the beta.

Mage: a new Frostfire Bolt

The headline Mage addition is Frostfire Bolt, a new spell learned at level 40. In the beta client files it counts as both a Fire spell and a Frost spell, has a 3 second cast, and is checked against the lower of the target's Frost and Fire resistance. It deals its damage up front, slows the target's movement by 40%, and leaves Frostfire damage over 9 seconds. Because it belongs to both schools, talents that help either Fire or Frost also help it.

Blizzard's deep dive describes Frostfire Bolt as large up-front damage like Fireball with a damage-over-time and slow attached, and says it uses the higher of the Mage's Fire or Frost spell damage bonus. The post also lists cross-school synergies: it can speed up a following Arcane Missiles, and it counts toward the stacking cast-time reduction on Pyroblast. These numbers come from Blizzard's write-up, not the client files.

For Mages, the update leans into the fantasy of choosing the right spell for the moment—whether that means layering control through Frost, building toward heavy Fire critical strikes, or using Arcane power to amplify the rest of the toolkit. New and revised talents give each school a stronger identity while also creating more room for cross-school builds that mix familiar strengths in new ways. Blizzard, Mage and Shaman class deep dive

Shaman: totems that need less fiddling

The Shaman changes aim to cut down on setup during a fight. Blizzard lists longer-lasting weapon imbues, faster and longer-lasting totems, totem tracking, Call spells, Totemic Recall and Totemic Projection as ways to drop totems with less repeated effort, while keeping placement and timing central to the class. Talent updates span the Elemental Combat, Enhancement and Restoration trees.

For Shaman, the focus is on making their most iconic tools more responsive in the middle of combat. Longer-lasting weapon imbues, faster and longer-lasting totems, totem tracking, Call spells, Totemic Recall, and Totemic Projection all help reduce repeated setup while keeping placement, timing, and elemental utility central to the class. Talent updates across Elemental Combat, Enhancement, and Restoration further support spellcasting, melee, healing, and hybrid play. Blizzard, Mage and Shaman class deep dive

Elemental Mastery removed (the updated note)

The first version of the deep dive left out one change. On 7 October Nethaera edited the Elemental Combat section to add it and apologised for the miss:

We’ve updated the section for Elemental Combat for Shaman to account for the missing Elemental Mastery talent removal note. Our apologies for missing that one. Nethaera, Community Manager

The change itself is that Elemental Mastery is gone for Elemental Shaman. Blizzard explains why:

Removed talents: Elemental Mastery. While this talent was a signature mainstay of Elemental Shaman, especially in PvP, it was also a problematic talent that was holding the class back. We could not increase Elemental Shaman damage to appropriate values in PvE and keep this talent. It would have made them much too strong in PvP. The best solution was to remove this talent and give Elemental Shaman new spells and capabilities. Nethaera, Community Manager

For players, this means Blizzard felt it could not raise Elemental Shaman's PvE damage to where it wanted while the talent stayed in, because that would have made the spec too strong in PvP. In return, Elemental is meant to get new spells and capabilities. We could not find an Elemental Mastery entry in the current beta client's spell files, which fits its removal.

Talents and specs

The deep dive repeats the series' talent rules: talents open at level 10 and keep a familiar layout, with one-point milestone talents at 11, 21 and 31 points plus a new 16-point milestone. You respec, including Legacy talents, at a class trainer in a major city, and Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40. More on each class on our Mage and Shaman pages.
