WoW Forever beta errors and how to fix them

Most WoW Forever beta login problems are on Blizzard's side, during maintenance or a service issue: check the server status first, then drop your game's Logs\Connection.log below to see exactly where your login stopped.

Check your game's log

Drop Connection.log here. Find it in your World of Warcraft folder: _classic_beta_\Logs\Connection.log (the game writes a new one each time it starts, so check it straight after the problem). Your log is read by your browser on this computer. It is never uploaded, and nothing is kept.

Stuck on "Retrieving character list"

Your game got through Battle.net and the realm accepted you, but the realm never sent your characters. That is what testers ran into on the night of 1 October, after the maintenance for the level 30 build (Blizzard, 1 Oct 2026): Blizzard posted that it was working on an issue preventing testers from logging in (Blizzard, 2 Oct 2026). There's nothing to fix on your PC when the realm doesn't answer; check the server status and Blizzard's posts, and try again later.

A second login disconnects the first

With more than one WoW license on one Battle.net account, the beta has no account selector, so a second login kicks the first player. A community manager suggested trying a PTR account, made under Starter Editions & Public Test Regions on your Battle.net account page (Blizzard, 18 Sep 2026).

"Realm is full" and long queues

On 27 September Blizzard found and fixed an issue that was making the queue fill up (Blizzard, 27 Sep 2026). A queue position in your log means the login server is up and you're waiting your turn.

Locked out of a character

For "Character with that name already exists" lock-outs, Blizzard asked testers to report the character's name and the exact time they were last playing it and got disconnected (Blizzard, 22 Sep 2026).

The game won't launch or update

Lag and disconnects

In the beta's first days EU testers had routing problems. Blizzard put fixes in place for what was in its control, and said some routing problems are outside it, such as an Internet provider's issue or firewall software slowing or blocking the connection (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026).

General connection troubleshooting

Speculation: General WoW advice, not from Blizzard's Forever posts: restart the game and the Battle.net app; restart your router; try once without a VPN or a game booster; let the Battle.net app run Scan and Repair; delete the game's Cache folder; and if the game errors at the character screen after an update, try it once with addons turned off.

Questions and answers

Why is WoW Forever stuck on retrieving character list?

The realm accepted your login but didn't send your characters. It usually happens on Blizzard's side, during or after maintenance or a service issue; your game's Connection.log shows it as a character list request with no response.

Where is the WoW Forever log file?

In your World of Warcraft folder, under _classic_beta_\Logs\Connection.log for the beta. General.log and Client.log are next to it.

Does this page upload my log?

No. The log is read by your browser on your own computer and never leaves it.
