Blizzard's short story “Unbowed”: a Forsaken crusader asks if the undead can still serve the Light

Blizzard has released a new WoW: Forever short story, “Unbowed”, following Cormack, a former Scarlet Crusader raised as Forsaken, and the question of whether a Forsaken can still serve the Light. It lands alongside Forever's own change: the Forsaken can now be Paladins.

On October 26 Blizzard posted a new World of Warcraft: Forever short story, “Unbowed”. It follows Cormack, a crusader who served the Scarlet Crusade in life and was raised as Forsaken in death, and the question he is left with once he has faced his past.

Cormack, a former Scarlet Crusader in life, now raised as Forsaken, struggles to accept his undead existence. After confronting both his past and the beliefs that defined him, he is left to ask himself: can a Forsaken still serve the Light? Blizzard credits the story to Sean Copeland (written by), Surfside 3D (illustrated by) and Jesse Burch, who narrates as Cormack. It is told as a “fireside telling”, and Blizzard's post links a downloadable PDF.

Why it matters for Forever

The question the story asks, whether a Forsaken can serve the Light, is the one Forever puts into the game. In the beta client the Forsaken can now be Paladins, a class combination they did not have in Classic Era. See it on our Forsaken lore page and the Paladin page, and in the client's own race list.

Cormack's background sharpens the irony. The client's own Forsaken lore marks the Scarlet Crusade as an enemy of the undead: a faction that hunts the Forsaken on sight. Cormack was one of those crusaders, and now stands on the other side of that line, still reaching for the Light he once fought in its name.

“Unbowed” is one of Blizzard's own short stories, not a game update. The checkable Forever change behind it is that the Forsaken can be Paladins in the beta client; the story itself is lore and media from Blizzard.
