Player reports an undocumented Mage talent hotfix: Elemental Precision shrunk to 3 ranks, Piercing Ice gone, respecs forced

The Mage Frost talent tree painting from the WoW Forever client

· ForeverDB

A beta player reports that Mage Frost talents changed overnight with no patch notes, forcing a respec: Elemental Precision condensed to three ranks and Piercing Ice removed. Blizzard has posted nothing about it, and the Forever beta client files we have still show the old talents, so treat this as a single unconfirmed report.

On 20 October a player going by Zipfte posted on r/wowforever that their Mage talents had changed with no patch notes, enough to force a respec. They said it happened within the last couple of hours, because they had run Razorfen Kraul earlier with their talents intact. What they found so far:

  • Elemental Precision (Elemental Precision): 1%/2%/3%/4%/5% changed to 2%/4%/6%, so five ranks condensed to three.
  • Piercing Ice (Piercing Ice): gone.
  • Might be others but idk the tree that well.

Player report, not a Blizzard change or statement. One player, not yet confirmed by Blizzard or by the client files. Blizzard has posted no patch notes for this.

What the client files still show

The Forever beta client data we have has not changed to match. In our files Elemental Precision (Elemental Precision) still has five ranks, improving your chance to hit with Frost and Fire spells by 1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5%. Piercing Ice (Piercing Ice) still exists, with three ranks increasing the damage of your Frost spells by 2%, 4% and 6%. If the hotfix is real, it was applied on Blizzard's servers and has not yet reached the datamined files, so we cannot verify the exact new numbers.

Worth noting: the 2%/4%/6% the player gives for Elemental Precision is the same spread the client currently lists for Piercing Ice. We cannot tell from here whether that is a coincidence, a rough recollection, or the shape of the real change. We will update the Mage talents once the client confirms it.

Speculation. The reported values might be approximate or mixed up between the two talents. Reason: they come from one player reading tooltips in game, and the client files we have do not yet show any change to either talent.

If it is live

A forced respec means the game reset the player's talent points for them, which Blizzard does when a tree's structure changes. Dropping Elemental Precision from five ranks to three would free up two points for Frost Mages, and removing Piercing Ice would take away a flat Frost damage talent. On the beta a re-spec is cheap (1 silver if you have not changed talents recently), so re-doing your tree costs little for now. None of this is confirmed until Blizzard posts notes or the client updates.
