The WoW: Forever podcast episode 4: the PvP episode with Aggrend and Tim Jones

· ForeverDB
Blizzard has released episode 4 of the official WoW: Forever podcast, a PvP conversation with Senior Game Designer Josh "Aggrend" Greenfield and Lead Designer Tim Jones, hosted by Countdown To Classic with PvP creators Savix and Tips Out. One early point from the episode, as reported by Wowhead: Aggrend says there is no plan to add protection for lower-level players from being killed or camped by higher-level players on PvP servers. PvP systems like honour, battlegrounds and world PvP are worked out on Blizzard's servers, not the client files, so we won't put numbers to anything the devs say until we've been through the video.
This is an announcement of an official World of Warcraft video, posted on Blizzard's own channels. What Blizzard writes on those channels is quoted word for word. Quotes from inside the video are taken from other sites' reports until we've been through the episode ourselves; those are labelled. PvP in Classic is mostly about honour, battlegrounds and world PvP, which Blizzard's servers run rather than the client, so the game files can't confirm most of what the devs discuss. We'll follow up with a detailed write-up, checking every named ability against the Forever beta client, as we did for episodes 1 to 3.
Blizzard put out episode 4 of the WoW: Forever podcast on 15 October 2026. It's the PvP episode, hosted by Countdown To Classic with Senior Game Designer Josh "Aggrend" Greenfield and Lead Designer Tim Jones, plus PvP content creators Savix and Tips Out. Kaivax posted it on the forums, and there's a news article on the Blizzard site.

Blizzard describes the episode as a look at the team's approach to PvP and what it means for players "as they prepare to enter the fray". Blizzard has not posted written PvP notes alongside it, so the conversation itself is the source. We've not seen Blizzard put PvP tuning in the beta development notes yet either.
No protection planned for lower-level players
Update, 15 October. Wowhead reports that in the episode Savix asked Aggrend whether there were any plans to protect lower-level players from being killed and camped by higher-level players on PvP servers, something some players have asked for. Per Wowhead's write-up, Aggrend's answer was no:
In substance, Josh "Aggrend" Greenfield, Senior Game Designer (in the WoW: Forever podcast, reported by Wowhead) said (source): The short answer is: no. PvP occurs on a PvP server. It has been true for 22 years of this game. That's something you gotta look inward and ask yourself if you are ok with... You may have a frustrating game session because that just happens.
These words reach us through Wowhead's report of the podcast, not from a Blizzard post, so we quote them as Wowhead shows them. We'll replace this with a direct quote and a timestamp once we've watched the episode. World PvP flagging and who can attack whom are handled by Blizzard's servers, not the client files, so the game data can't confirm the rule either way.
In short: on a PvP realm a higher-level player can kill and camp a lower-level one, and Blizzard does not plan to change that. If that would spoil the game for you, a PvE realm avoids it.
What we can and can't check
- Honour, battlegrounds and world PvP are server systems. They aren't in the client files, so when the devs talk about them we can only report their words, not confirm numbers from the data.
- Class abilities are in the client. Where the devs name a spell or talent, we can check its level, cost and effect against the Forever beta client and show the Classic Era version for comparison, the same way we did for the earlier episodes.
- Nothing here is live yet in the same sense. The beta can still change before launch, and anything the devs describe may land in a later build.
Apart from the one reported quote above, we've not pulled quotes from inside the video yet. We won't attribute further PvP claims to Blizzard until we've gone through the episode and can quote the devs word for word with a timestamp. A fuller breakdown will follow here.
The podcast so far
This is the fourth episode. Our write-ups of the earlier ones, each checked against the client: episode 1 on gearing and pacing, episode 2 on class design, and episode 3 on dungeons.
