Hunters are ranged physical damage dealers with pets, traps and stings. Forever adds Summon Hawk (a Beast Mastery talent: a hawk dive-bomb sharing Arcane Shot's cooldown), melee attack power on Aspect of the Beast, the Marksmanship capstone Sniper Shot and a real melee Survival toolkit with Strider Kick, Lacerate and a weapon-based Counterattack. Aimed Shot is a trainer ability at level 20 and shares its cooldown with Multi-Shot.
Beast Mastery Hunter PvE guide
Beast Mastery puts much of its damage through the pet. At 20 the dungeon build fills Deadly Aspects for an Auto Shot haste proc under Aspect of the Hawk, takes Focused Fire for 2% more damage from you and your pet, and opens Unleashed Fury, which adds 3% pet damage per rank. In a group you shoot from range, keep the pet on the tank's target and handle crowd control with Freezing Trap.
Your job in a group
Ranged damage from you and your pet. Turn off your pet's Growl autocast so it doesn't take threat from the tank, and send it in only once the tank has the mob. You're also a crowd controller: set Freezing Trap before the pull for the tank to bring a mob onto. Hunter's Mark raises the Ranged Attack Power of every attacker on the marked target, and you can pull from long range with a shot when the tank asks. Hunters have no interrupt at 20. Furious Howl, if your pet knows it, adds damage to the next Physical attack of party members within 15 yards (Blizzard's patch notes cut its bonus in Forever).
Opener
- Hunter's Mark: Before the pull, on the mob the group kills first; every ranged attacker on it gains Ranged Attack Power.
- Growl: Turn off its autocast in groups so your pet doesn't pull threat from the tank.
- Aspect of the Hawk: Keep it on while you shoot; Deadly Aspects only procs while it's up.
- Auto Shot: Once the tank has the mob, send the pet in and start shooting.
- Serpent Sting: On mobs that will live through most of its 15 sec; skip it on trash that dies fast.
- Arcane Shot: On cooldown while your mana holds.
Cooldowns
- Freezing Trap: Set it before the pull for the mob you've been asked to control; it holds for up to 10 sec and any damage breaks it.
- Multi-Shot: On packs of two or three; hold it while a mob is frozen nearby.
- Immolation Trap: Where the tank will hold the pack: the first mob in burns for 15 sec.
- Mend Pet: Heal the pet early on big pulls; it heals over 5 sec.
- Distracting Shot: If a mob runs at your healer, it turns the mob onto you so the tank can pick it up.
Stats
Agility, Hit, Ranged Attack Power, Critical Strike, Intellect, Stamina. Agility is your main shooting stat. Hit keeps Auto Shot and your shots landing, and Ranged Attack Power and Critical Strike add damage. Intellect matters more than it looks at 20, because mana is what stops you shooting on long pulls. Stamina comes last in a group, where the tank takes the hits.
Tips
- Your pet does a large share of your damage. Keep it fed with Feed Pet, and pick its skills for groups: Dust Cloud (a tallstrider skill) lowers the target's Armor for every physical attacker, while Swipe hits 3 nearby enemies and will break a Freezing Trap.
- Mana is the real limit at 20: Serpent Sting and Arcane Shot cost 50 mana each at their level 18 and 20 ranks, so skip the sting on trash that dies fast and drink before big pulls.
- Focused Fire adds 2% to all damage you and your pet deal, but only while the pet is out. If your pet dies, revive it between pulls rather than mid-fight: Revive Pet is a long cast, and none of the dungeon builds take Improved Revive Pet.
- Blizzard's patch notes say Tame Beast no longer works on beasts above your level, so your dungeon pet has to come from beasts at or below your level.
- Multi-Shot shares its cooldown with Aimed Shot, which every Hunter learns from the trainer at 20. On packs, spend the cooldown on Multi-Shot; just never next to a frozen mob.
- Blizzard's 1 October notes brought back your pet's Aggressive Mode, found under the pet tab in your spellbook, and fixed tameable beasts whose pet ability ranks were too high for that creature.
Marksmanship Hunter PvE guide
Marksmanship is the pure shooter. Lethal Attacks adds crit, and the dungeon build takes Careful Aim, which turns your Intellect into Attack Power and opens Mortal Shots at 25. In a group you shoot from range, keep Freezing Trap ready for crowd control and lean on Auto Shot when your mana runs low. Aimed Shot is a trainer ability at 20, not a talent; it shares its cooldown with Multi-Shot and adds only 20 damage at rank 1, so it's a single-target filler.
Your job in a group
Ranged damage and crowd control. You shoot from range, and Hunter's Mark raises the Ranged Attack Power of every attacker on the marked target. Freezing Trap is your crowd control: set it before the pull for the tank to bring a mob onto, and keep area damage away from it. You can pull from long range when the tank asks, turn your pet's Growl off so it doesn't take threat, and use Concussive Shot to slow a mob heading for the healer or running for help. Hunters have no interrupt at 20.
Opener
- Hunter's Mark: Before the pull, on the first kill target.
- Growl: Turn off its autocast so your pet leaves threat to the tank.
- Aspect of the Hawk: Keep it on for its Ranged Attack Power.
- Auto Shot: Once the tank has the mob; keep it running all fight.
- Serpent Sting: On anything that will live through most of its 15 sec; if the mob dies with it on, Rapid Killing boosts your next Shot.
- Arcane Shot: On cooldown while your mana allows.
Cooldowns
- Freezing Trap: Set it before the pull; it holds a mob for up to 10 sec unless something damages it.
- Multi-Shot: On two or three mobs; never next to a frozen one.
- Immolation Trap: Set it where the tank will hold the pack, for 15 sec of Fire damage on the first mob in.
- Concussive Shot: Slow a mob running for help or heading for your healer: 50% slower for 4 sec.
- Distracting Shot: Turns a loose mob off your healer and onto you so the tank can pick it up.
Stats
Agility, Hit, Critical Strike, Ranged Attack Power, Intellect, Stamina. Agility is your main shooting stat. Hit keeps your shots landing, and Critical Strike works with Lethal Attacks now and with Mortal Shots from 25. Intellect keeps you shooting on long pulls, and with Careful Aim at 5/5 every point of it also adds a point of Attack Power, so it's worth more for Marksmanship than for the other specs. Your ranged weapon's damage per second counts as well, so weigh it alongside these stats.
Tips
- Efficiency cuts the mana cost of every Shot, Sting and melee ability by 15% at 5/5. The leveling and PvP builds take it at 20; the dungeon build takes Careful Aim first and adds 3 points of Efficiency by 30. When mana runs low anyway, stop Arcane Shot and let Auto Shot carry you, since it costs nothing.
- Improved Concussive Shot gives Concussive Shot a 4% stun chance per rank (20% at 5/5), but the builds spend tier 1 on Lethal Attacks' crit, which helps every fight.
- Keep Serpent Sting on pack mobs: Rapid Killing's bonus triggers when a mob dies with your sting on it, even if someone else lands the killing blow.
- Multi-Shot shares its cooldown with Aimed Shot in Forever: Multi-Shot on packs, Aimed Shot on a single target you can stand still for.
- Hunter's Mark lasts 2 min and has a long range, so mark the next pull's kill target while the group is still drinking.
- Lone Wolf (tier 3) gives 20% more damage with no pet out. The builds keep the pet, but it's worth testing for dungeons if your pet's share of your damage is small.
Survival Hunter PvE guide
Survival turns into a melee spec at 30, the current beta cap, when Aspect of the Beast and Lacerate arrive from the trainer and Strider Kick, a tier 5 talent, comes within reach. At 20 its melee kit is thin, so in a dungeon you fight from range like the other specs: Improved Tracking adds 5% damage against the creature type you track, and Clever Traps makes your Freezing Trap last longer.
Your job in a group
At 20, ranged damage and crowd control: shoot from behind the tank, set your tracking to the dungeon's main creature type for Improved Tracking, and lay Freezing Trap for the mob the group wants controlled (Clever Traps holds it longer). From 30 you fight in melee from behind the target. Turn off your pet's Growl so it leaves threat to the tank. Hunters have no interrupt at 20, and Disengage lowers your threat if a mob turns on you in melee.
Opener
- Track Humanoids: Or Track Beasts or Track Undead, whichever matches the dungeon's main enemies; Improved Tracking adds damage against the tracked type.
- Hunter's Mark: Before the pull, on the first kill target.
- Growl: Turn off its autocast so the pet leaves threat to the tank.
- Aspect of the Hawk: Keep it on while you shoot.
- Auto Shot: Once the tank has the mob.
- Serpent Sting: On mobs that will live through most of its 15 sec.
- Arcane Shot: On cooldown while your mana holds.
Cooldowns
- Freezing Trap: Set it before the pull for the mob you're asked to control: up to 10 sec, longer with Clever Traps, and any damage breaks it.
- Immolation Trap: Where the tank will hold the pack; Clever Traps adds to its damage.
- Multi-Shot: On packs, but never next to your frozen mob.
- Raptor Strike: If a mob reaches you: Savage Strikes makes it crit more often, then let the tank take the mob back.
- Disengage: Lowers your threat on a mob in melee range; it turns off your auto-attack, so restart Auto Shot afterwards.
Stats
Agility, Hit, Critical Strike, Attack Power, Ranged Attack Power, Stamina. Agility helps both your shooting at 20 and your melee from 30, so it's the stat to chase. Hit and Critical Strike come next; Savage Strikes adds a little melee crit and Predator's Edge makes melee crits hit harder from 30. Attack Power drives the melee you'll do from 30 and Ranged Attack Power the shooting you do now. Stamina helps against the area damage you take in melee.
Tips
- Set tracking before every pull: Improved Tracking at 5/5 adds 5% damage against the tracked creature type, ranged and melee alike.
- Keep Multi-Shot and Serpent Sting off the mob in your Freezing Trap; any damage breaks it.
- Mongoose Bite only works after you dodge, and behind a tank you're rarely attacked, so don't plan around it in groups.
- Disengage turns off your auto-attack, so press Auto Shot again after using it.
- This dungeon build is for Survival players who'd rather not respec before 30, and every point carries over into the level 30 Survival dungeon build.
