25 Library Books: a new level 30 reward tier, but only the bow fits at 30

Wowhead reports a new Library Book turn-in on the WoW Forever beta: hand in 25 books at level 30 to choose one of three Rare rewards. The beta client files show only the bow Truthseeker's Bow has no level requirement; the shield Crest of Elucidation and the off-hand Researcher's Night Light both need level 40.

Library books are found around Azeroth and handed in to a Faction Librarian for rewards at different book counts. Wowhead reports a new tier: at level 30 you can now turn in 25 books for the quest Greater Friend of the Library, which lets you choose one of three Rare rewards. All three are in the beta client files, flagged as new Forever items.

Reported, not confirmed by Blizzard. The book hand-in, the 25-book count, the quest names and the level 30 requirement come from Wowhead and play on the beta, not from a Blizzard post. The item names, quality, item level, stats and level requirements below are from the client files.

The three rewards (choose one)

  • Truthseeker's Bow: a Rare bow, item level 45, 46 to 87 damage over a 2.80 speed, with +7 Agility and +3 Stamina. The client file sets no required level, so it can be equipped at level 30.
  • Crest of Elucidation: a Rare shield, item level 45, 1,580 armour, with +12 Spirit, +11 healing and +4 spell damage. It needs level 40 to equip.
  • Researcher's Night Light: a Rare off-hand frill (held in off-hand), item level 45, with +12 Stamina and a second stat the client files leave unlabelled. It needs level 40 to equip.

Only the bow fits at level 30

The quest opens at level 30, but in the client files only the bow carries no level requirement. The shield and the off-hand both require level 40, so you can claim them at 30 but not equip them until later. That matches Wowhead's note that only one of the three can be equipped at level 30. The bow's Agility makes it most useful to Hunters, who can use it the moment they hand the books in.

Wowhead adds a guess about the bow: It's possible that, since the other two quest rewards require level 40, the bow is also intended to be level-locked. As of the current files that lock is not there. The bow's record has no required level, so right now it can be worn at 30.

Speculation. The idea that the bow is meant to be locked to level 40, like the other two rewards, is Wowhead's reasoning, not a Blizzard statement. The client currently sets no level requirement on it. This could change in a later build.

The earlier tiers

The smaller tiers are unchanged. Wowhead reports 10 books gives Friend of the Library, a choice of two Uncommon necklaces, Scholarly Pendant or Erudite's Amulet; 20 books gives a choice of two Rare rings, Field Researcher's Loop or Philanthropist's Ring. Those rewards were weakened in the October 2 build; see our write-up on the book reward nerf. Reaching 25 books was out of range at the old level 20 cap, and is only possible now that the cap is 30, which we covered in the level 30 build.
