TechRadar interview: Blizzard won't modernise Forever's classes or add Summoning Stones, and has no plans for retail races

· ForeverDB
Talking to TechRadar, the WoW: Forever team said the Classic classes won't be modernised and Summoning Stones won't be added, because easy teleports shrink the world. It also has no plans for expansion races like Goblins or Vulpera at this time.
TechRadar spread its interview with the WoW: Forever team across several articles on October 12, covering class design, playable races and Summoning Stones, and Wowhead summarised it.
The quotes below are the WoW: Forever team's words as TechRadar reports them, not patch notes or beta client data. The beta is ongoing and plans can still change before launch.
Classes won't be modernised
Blizzard said it does not want to overhaul the Classic classes players know. It is aiming for simpler classes with more depth, and a few classes that felt too thin are getting some added mechanics.
to err on the side of simpler classes, but with engaging depth WoW: Forever team, in an interview with TechRadar
some classes in the Classic era were too simple, so those have gained a few mechanics WoW: Forever team, in an interview with TechRadar
The level of mechanical complexity found in the beta classes is indicative of our intentions WoW: Forever team, in an interview with TechRadar
So the classes on the beta now are close to the shape Blizzard wants. Each one's talent trees and abilities are on our class pages.
On respecs, Wowhead's summary says the cost will climb quickly and reset once per week. That isn't in a direct Blizzard quote or in the client files, so treat it as reported. The beta works differently for now: a re-spec starts at 1 silver, jumps after your first reset, then drops back to 1 silver once an hour has passed. Blizzard set that rule on its servers and called it temporary and beta-only. More in our September 24 beta notes.
No plans for retail races
Asked about modern races such as Goblins and Vulpera, the team said it has no plans to add races from WoW's expansions at this time (source). It wants to build on the original Warcraft lore instead.
Our main focus for the game is to build off the foundational lore of Warcraft WoW: Forever team, in an interview with TechRadar
One of the liberating things about this game existing in its own continuity is that we can forge our own path forward and tell stories that serve the world of WoW: Forever first and foremost WoW: Forever team, in an interview with TechRadar
Apart from Forever's own Skyborne (High Order Skyborne for the Alliance, Windshaper Skyborne for the Horde), the Alliance and Horde line-up stays as it is in the original game. Goblins, Worgen, Blood Elves and Draenei are expansion races, so this rules them out for now. Blizzard's "at this time" leaves the door open, but there is no plan today.
A Reddit thread collected the disappointment, with players worried that races like Goblins get left behind. That's player reaction, not part of Blizzard's statement.
No Summoning Stones
Blizzard confirmed Forever will not add Summoning Stones, because quick teleports make the world feel smaller and chip away at a Warlock's role in gathering a group.
Easy, quick access to teleports shrink the world, and marginalize part of the identity of a class like Warlock. WoW: Forever team, in an interview with TechRadar
We have a lot of different players with a lot of different preferences joining us for this journey, which is a great thing, and makes it all the more important to hold the line when it comes to our pillars. WoW: Forever team, in an interview with TechRadar
So to pull a group to a dungeon you still need a Warlock's summon ritual (the Warlock plus two others), or everyone travels there. For comparison, the stones outside dungeons in Classic Era were Meeting Stones that only helped form a group; summoning players through them came later, in The Burning Crusade. Forever keeps the earlier approach, so travel and a Warlock's summon stay part of getting a group together.
Blizzard framed all of this as holding to its design pillars. Any change has to pass muster against those pillars, the team said, and certain convenience changes can very easily erode one or more of them (source).
