PAX Australia interview: Blizzard on character caps and realmless, cross-region play

· ForeverDB
At PAX Australia 2026, Holly Longdale and Clay Stone were interviewed about WoW: Forever. As summarised by Wowhead from Fiamma's video, Blizzard has not announced a launch character cap, and cross-region play still faces technical hurdles. Blizzard's own posts already confirm Forever is going realmless, with players choosing a ruleset and character names unique within a region.
At PAX Australia 2026, where Holly Longdale and Clay Stone gave keynote talks, several creators got to interview the WoW: Forever team. Content creator Fiamma published her interview on YouTube, and on October 14 Wowhead summarised the key points. Two stood out: how many characters you will be able to make at launch, and whether play could ever cross regions.
The interview points below are Wowhead's summary of Fiamma's video, not Blizzard's exact words. A report, not a Blizzard post. Where Blizzard has put something in writing, we quote that post instead.
What Blizzard has already confirmed about going realmless
Most of the interview builds on a plan Blizzard set out in its Deep Dive Panel Recap on September 13. Instead of picking a realm, you pick a ruleset:
Instead of asking players to make that decision before creating a character, World of Warcraft: Forever is going realmless, making it easier to connect with friends while still preserving the community feel that has always made realms memorable. Blizzard Entertainment, official news post
The rulesets are Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Hardcore (Hardcore arrives after launch). (Update, 22 October: Blizzard is also adding a Roleplay-PvP ruleset for launch on 4 November.) Blizzard is clear that realmless does not mean one giant server, and that you still can only play with people on your own ruleset and faction:
This is not one giant realm for everyone, and cross-ruleset grouping is not supported. Factions remain separate, so Horde and Alliance players still cannot group together. Blizzard Entertainment, official news post
Blizzard's Create a Name of Your Own post (September 21) explains how names work without realms. Your name has to be unique across your whole region, not just one realm, which is why Forever uses a two-name structure:
Your full character name needs to be distinct within your region, rather than only within a single realm, supporting a world where more players can adventure together while names remain recognizable over time. Blizzard Entertainment, official news post
Cross-region play
In the interview, Blizzard talked about going a step further and letting players meet across regions, and said there are technical challenges to that. Per Wowhead's summary, this is the first time they have gone realmless at all, where players only choose a ruleset, and that is working well on the beta. They said that is as far as they can take it for now. It is not that they do not want to try cross-region, but they need more time. In plain terms: realmless within a region is here on the beta, and playing across regions is not promised, only something they are looking at.
Reported by Wowhead from Fiamma's interview. Blizzard has not posted this in writing, so we cannot quote exact words or check it against the client data. Treat it as a report.
Character caps
On how many characters you can have, Wowhead's summary is short: Blizzard has not announced a launch character cap yet, and there are technical reasons behind the number. Nothing firm was given. In Classic Era the limit is 10 characters on a single realm, with a wider cap across your account. Because Forever is realmless and names are counted per region rather than per realm, how that limit is framed may differ, but Blizzard has not said what it will be.
No character cap has been confirmed for WoW: Forever. Whatever limit the beta used is not a launch promise.
