Shaman

Shaman speak to the spirits of earth, fire, water and air, and the spirits answer. Once only the Horde had them. In Forever, dwarves and the Skyborne's Windshapers join the circle.

Who can be one, and where they learn

Alliance: Dwarf (new in Forever). Horde: Orc, Tauren, Troll, Windshaper Skyborne (new in Forever).

Trainers (Classic's data) in Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff.

Class quests: Call of Earth (level 4, teaches Stoneskin Totem, Classic's quest); Call of Fire (level 10, teaches Searing Totem, Classic's quest); Call of Water (level 20, teaches Healing Stream Totem, Classic's quest).

The client's character-creation text: Shaman commune directly with the elements. Their combination of wisdom and resilience makes them ideal as community advisors and leaders. In battle the shaman use totems and spells to manipulate the elements and provoke other fighters to untold heights of rage and might. Shaman exemplify the primal bond between the mortal races and their environment.

Who they are

Shaman don't command the elements; they ask. Their totems and spells are a partnership with spirits, and their people look to them for counsel as much as for power in battle.

Their combination of wisdom and resilience makes them ideal as community advisors and leaders.

Their place in Azeroth now

Shamanism is the Horde's faith. Thrall, a shaman himself, brought it back to the orcs after their fall; trolls have their own traditions with the spirits and the loa; tauren shaman have always kept the old ways of the plains. A young shaman's first trials are to earn the favour of earth, fire and water, which the class quests below mark. In Forever the client adds the Earthen Ring, a Horde circle of shaman and druids, as a faction to serve.

Warcraft background: On Draenor orc shaman spoke with the elements until the demon-worshipping warlocks replaced them. Thrall was taught shamanism by the Frostwolf elder Drek'Thar, and the new Horde's return to the elements is part of its break with its demonic past.

In WoW Forever

In WoW Forever: Dwarves can now be shaman, one of the six new race and class combinations, and the Windshaper Skyborne can be too. The Windshapers are shamanic leaders whose whole culture was built on a pact with the spirits of air, and whose spirits have vanished. A Windshaper shaman is a shaman whose patrons have gone silent.

Speculation: Classic's trainer data has no Alliance shaman trainers, so where dwarf shaman train in Forever isn't in the client yet.

RP hooks and character ideas

  • One of Forever's first dwarf shaman, who felt the stone of Ironforge speak and can't explain it to the priests of the Light.
  • A Windshaper who can speak to earth and fire but not to the wind that raised their people.
  • An orc shaman who remembers when the elements refused to answer the Horde at all.
  • A tauren elder's apprentice sent to the Earthen Ring to learn from other traditions.
  • A troll shaman who sees little difference between the elements and the loa, and argues about it with everyone.
