Mages

Scholars of the arcane who bend frost, fire and raw magic to their will. In Forever, two new kinds of mage join them: orcs, whose people learned to fear magic, and the High Order Skyborne, who want back the magic their people lost.

Who can be one, and where they learn

Alliance: Human, Gnome, High Order Skyborne (new in Forever). Horde: Orc (new in Forever), Undead, Troll.

Trainers (Classic's data) in Darnassus, Ironforge, Stormwind City, Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff, Undercity.

Class quests: Arcane Refreshment (level 60, teaches Conjure Water, Classic's quest).

The client's character-creation text: Magi are wizards of immense knowledge and skill. Their obvious physical frailty is deceptive, for they can call upon the cosmic energies of the Twisting Nether. Rarely do magi engage in melee combat. Instead, they prefer to attack from a distance, hurling powerful bolts of frost and flame at their unsuspecting enemies.

Who they are

Mages study for years to master what most people only fear. They are fragile in a fight and dangerous at a distance.

Their place in Azeroth now

The heart of magecraft is Dalaran and its rulers, the Kirin Tor, which the Forever client makes an Alliance faction. In Year 1 Dalaran is in trouble: Blizzard's new City of Dalaran dungeon is about strange magic loose in the city. Mages also train in Stormwind, Ironforge and, for the Horde, Orgrimmar, Undercity and Thunder Bluff (Classic's trainer data).

Warcraft background: Humans learned magic from the high elves of Quel'Thalas, and Dalaran became their city of wizards. Night elves remember that arcane magic nearly destroyed the world in the War of the Ancients, and distrust it. The Forsaken include many former mages of Lordaeron and Dalaran; trolls have their own magic traditions.

In WoW Forever

In WoW Forever: Orcs can now be mages, one of the six new race and class combinations: after their warlocks led them into slavery, an orc mage has to convince their own clan that arcane magic isn't fel magic. And the High Order Skyborne can be mages: their whole purpose in Azeroth is to reclaim the arcane knowledge of their Highborne ancestors, so that their people never depend on the wind spirits again.

Alliance-aligned Skyborne pursue the arcane legacy of their ancestors and gain access to the Mage class.

RP hooks and character ideas

  • One of Forever's first orc mages, mistrusted by warlocks and shaman alike.
  • A High Order scholar who reached Dalaran at exactly the wrong moment.
  • A Kirin Tor apprentice cut off from their masters by whatever is happening in the city.
  • A gnome mage who uses magic and engineering in equal measure and blames the magic when things explode.
  • A Forsaken who was a mage of Dalaran in life and remembers spells nobody taught them since.
  • A night elf who studies magic in secret, and is fascinated by the High Order.
