Student Fodder no longer gives rested XP on the Forever beta

The Blackwing Lair loading screen from the WoW Forever client

· ForeverDB

The Sleeping Bag reward Student Fodder used to grant rested experience in Season of Discovery. In the Forever beta client it instead heals you, restores some of your resource, adds a heal over time and a short speed boost. No rested-experience effect is left on the item in the game files.

The Sleeping Bag quest chain and its reward Student Fodder return on the WoW Forever beta. Wowhead reports that Student Fodder no longer grants rested experience, and that its buff has been reworked. We checked the item and its spells in the beta client to see what it does now.

Wowhead reports this. It is not a Blizzard change or statement. The rested-experience buff, and the figure of four bars of rested XP, come from Season of Discovery in Classic Era, not from the Forever client. The current effects below are from the Forever beta game files (build 1.60.1.70009).

What Student Fodder does in the Forever client

In the beta files Student Fodder is an uncommon item flagged as a Season of Discovery item. Using it casts Trail Snack, named Trail Snack. That spell carries several effects:

  • An instant heal for about 500 health (the file gives a range of 412 to 588).
  • A resource refill that matches your class: 900 Mana, 500 Rage or 100 Energy.
  • A heal over time of 175 health every 2 seconds for 12 seconds, so 1,050 over the full duration. The buff text reads "Regenerating 175 health every 2 sec for 12 sec."

There is also a second, new spell in the client called Trail Snack, Trail Snack. It increases movement speed by 60% for 0.75 seconds and is linked to Trail Snack. So on top of the heal and resource refill you get a very short sprint. Both spells share a 30 minute cooldown in the files.

None of these effects is rested experience. The effect list on Trail Snack is heals and resource restores only, which matches Wowhead's report that the rested-XP buff was removed. We cannot read the old Season of Discovery version from the Forever client, so the four bars of rested XP it used to give is Wowhead's account of Classic Era, not something we can confirm here.

What it means for players

Student Fodder is now a recovery and mobility snack rather than a levelling boost. It tops up your health and resource, trickles a little more health over the next 12 seconds, and gives a brief burst of speed. That is useful between pulls, but it will not bank rested experience the way the Classic Era version did.

Speculation. Wowhead suggests the rested-experience buff was dropped because Forever already has other ways to speed up levelling, such as the Campfire buff covered in our September 24 notes. The client does not record a reason, and Blizzard has not posted one, so treat the why as a guess.
