Mage in WoW: Forever: what the datamine says is coming

Mage talent tree paintings from the WoW Forever client

What the Forever beta client and official posts reveal for Mages: 2 new abilities, 38 new class items.

Speculation. This outlook is built from datamined Forever beta client data (build 1.60.1.70170) and official Blizzard posts. The beta is capped at level 30; anything above that isn't playable yet and can change.

What Blizzard changed this week

From the official WoW Forever Beta Development Notes – Updated September 24 (Kaivax, 2026-09-24):

  • Arcane Missiles no longer checks line of sight on each missile, just once at the beginning of the channel. So targets moving out of line of sight during the channel will not prevent the missiles.

Fire

  • Wake of Fire buff duration has been increased to 30 seconds (was 20 seconds).
Wake of Fire was difficult to make proper use of while leveling, due to the Mage needing to restore mana between combat. The increased duration should help smooth out the experience. Kaivax, WoW Forever Beta Development Notes – Updated September 24
  • Hot Streak buff duration has been increased to 20 seconds (was 15 seconds).
  • Ignite no longer double dips on % damage increase modifiers.

New abilities in the client

2 Mage abilities exist in the Forever client but not in Classic Era:

  • Frostfire Bolt — level 40 — above the current cap (a former Season of Discovery rune, now a class ability). Launches a bolt of frostfire at the enemy, causing 270 to 314 Frostfire damage, slowing movement speed by 40% and causing an additional 57 Frostfire damage over 9 sec.
  • Teleport: Dalaran — level 50 — above the current cap. Teleports the caster to Dalaran.

What levels 31 to 40 bring

Speculation: Blizzard hasn't announced the next level cap or when it comes. Forever's caps have gone up ten levels at a time so far, so this is what levels 31 to 40 hold in the client.

Talent trees

Tuning signals in the spell data

13 Mage spell ranks carry a different spell-power coefficient than in Classic Era. The biggest moves:

Mage-only gear that's new in Forever

Our read (speculation)

Mages get their signature Forever spells early. Arcane Blast and Ice Lance, both former Season of Discovery runes, are talents at 20: each sits in the third row of its section, teaches rank 1 and leaves the higher ranks to the trainer, so a level 20 Mage picks one or the other. The trees are built around them: Incineration raises their crit chance, and Improved Fireball also speeds up Frostfire Bolt, which arrives at 40. The level 30 cap adds Cone of Cold and brings Shatter (three ranks, up to 50% more crit on Frozen targets) and Fingers of Frost into reach, and since Ice Lance deals far more damage to Frozen targets, Frost gets its freeze-and-shatter play well before 40. Coldflame Saber, a Mage-only sword at level 21 that adds Fire damage to melee hits on Frozen targets, plays on the same idea.

This week's Fire changes are about leveling pace. Wake of Fire's buff now lasts 30 seconds because, as Blizzard explains, Mages have to restore mana between fights; Hot Streak (renamed Heating Up on 1 October) lasts longer too, and Ignite no longer double-dips on damage bonuses. The 13 coefficient changes point the same way: early Fireball, Frostbolt and Fire Blast ranks now scale far better from spell power, and with the Deep Dive recap promising spell power on caster leveling weapons, low ranks should keep pace with gear and make sensible downranking picks.

The client's real talent window, rebuilt from its trait tables, does include Hot Streak, which the notes tune and the 1 October build renamed Heating Up: a fourth-row Fire talent that needs Pyroblast and makes each Fireball, Fire Blast or Scorch crit shorten your next Pyroblast. Two more former runes sit beside it, Missile Barrage for Arcane and Fingers of Frost for Frost. Teleport: Dalaran at level 50 is the eye-catcher; nothing official yet explains what Dalaran means in Forever. Arcane Missiles now checks line of sight only when the channel starts, a small quality-of-life win. Orc Mages and Alliance-aligned Skyborne Mages are new race options.
