Goblin barbers will be swapped for city races in a future build, says designer Johnny Cash

The Darnassus map from the WoW Forever client

The October 1 beta build put barbers in every barbershop and added barbershops to Darnassus and Thunder Bluff. After player feedback, designer Johnny Cash said on X that the goblin barbers will be replaced by races that fit each city in a future build, except Glix Xizzix in the Undercity.

Barbershops arrived properly on the beta with the October 1 build. Blizzard's development notes for that build say:

There are now barbershops in Darnassus and Thunder Bluff, all barbershops now have barbers working at them, and city guards will give directions to barbershops. Kaivax, Community Manager (WoW Forever Beta Development Notes)

Players soon pointed out that many of the new barbers are goblins, even in cities like Darnassus and Thunder Bluff. On October 2 Johnny Cash, a principal game designer on WoW Forever, answered on X:

Totally hear and appreciate your feedback! The vibes just aren't quite right, so I'll change the barbers to be city-relevant races where they are currently goblins (nelves in Darnassus, tauren in TB, etc.) in a future build. Johnny Cash, Principal Game Designer on WoW Forever, on X

A few hours later he added that one goblin stays:

As a small clarification, Glix Xizzix in the Undercity will remain, as he has a narrative reason to be there. Worth checking out Forsaken Kingdom if you haven't yet to see how he ended up there! Johnny Cash, Principal Game Designer on WoW Forever, on X

What it means

  • The swap is planned for a future build, not live yet. Blizzard hasn't said which build will bring it.
  • Night elves are coming to the Darnassus barbershop and tauren to Thunder Bluff's, and other cities with goblin barbers get their own races too.
  • Glix Xizzix keeps his place in the Undercity, for a story reason Cash points to in the Forsaken Kingdom content.

City NPCs such as barbers are sent by Blizzard's servers, not stored in the client files we read, so we can't check the barbers' races in the game data. What's here comes from Blizzard's notes and Johnny Cash's posts.

Some videos described the change as moving the barbers to "SD models". That is not what Cash said: his post is about which race each barber is. For everything else in the October 1 build, see Level 30 build goes live.
