Beta weekend: login queues fixed, a higher population cap, and group-wide skinning (now reverted)

· ForeverDB
Blizzard fixed an issue that filled the beta's login queue and raised the population cap again. For about two weeks every skinner in a group could skin the same mob; in the October 1 build Blizzard reverted that, so a creature can be skinned only once again before it disappears.
Login queues fixed, and room for more players
Players on the beta reported a full realm and long queues over the weekend. On September 27 Kaivax replied on the forums:
We looked into this, and found an issue that was causing the queue to fill, and we just fixed the issue. Kaivax, Blizzard community manager
The same day, Executive Producer Holly Longdale announced on X that the beta's population cap has been raised again, as reported by Wowhead. No player numbers were given.
Group-wide skinning removed: back to one skinner per mob
Update, October 1. Blizzard put a new build on the beta that removes group-wide skinning. The change log, posted by Kaivax in the updated development notes, lists under Skinning:
Creatures can once again only be skinned a single time before disappearing. Kaivax, Community Manager
The wording (“once again”) means a mob can now be skinned one time, as in Classic Era, instead of once per skinner in the group. That ends the behaviour described below, which ran for about two weeks. Wowhead also reported the change. Blizzard's note doesn't say whether group-wide skinning was a bug or a test, and skinning loot is decided on Blizzard's servers, so the game files can't show it either way. The rest of that build is in our write-up of the level 30 build.
Until the October 1 build this was player reports only, not a Blizzard change or statement. Skinning loot is decided by the server, so it could not be checked in the game files.
What players had reported
From September 20 players reported on the beta forums that when several players with Skinning were in the same group, all of them could skin the same mob. Groups were already forming to farm leather this way (“skinning raids”), and players worried it flooded the market and left solo skinners behind.
One detailed report listed three behaviours:
- Every skinner in a group could skin the same mob. The poster called this “EASILY the biggest issue for the profession on beta”.
- Skinners could skin a mob the player who tagged it hadn't looted yet, as long as that player wasn't a skinner and the skinner hit the mob.
- Now and then, skinning an unlooted mob made it disappear for the player who still had to loot it, which looked like a plain bug.
An earlier thread reported the same thing with a video. Through late September neither thread had a Blizzard reply; the fix came in the October 1 build above.
Related: Cultivation and low-level herb farming
The September 24 build gave Tauren's Cultivation a player level requirement per herb (the herb's Herbalism requirement divided by 5, level 60 above 300 skill), and in the beta client files it has a 1-hour cooldown. Players had reported level 5 Tauren, many of them bots, cultivating high-level herbs in zones like Winterspring and Gadgetzan. Blizzard's notes don't say why it changed. More in our September 24 notes write-up.
