Does WoW Forever have servers? Rulesets explained
WoW Forever has no realm list: you choose a ruleset, Normal, PvP, Roleplaying or Roleplay-PvP, with Hardcore joining sometime after launch, and each one works as its own large community for grouping, dungeons and raids (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026) (Blizzard, 22 Oct 2026).
The rulesets
- Normal: exploring, questing and cooperating, with player-versus-player combat when you choose it (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026).
- PvP: for players who want more danger and open-world conflict in contested territory (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026).
- Roleplaying: for players who want to lean into the fantasy of Azeroth and find like-minded adventurers (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026). The game itself describes it as a ruleset with "strict naming conventions and behavior rules for players interested in immersing themselves as a character in a fantasy-based world".
- Roleplay-PvP: arrives with the launch on 4 November (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026). Blizzard added it on 22 October after players asked for it, and said it planned to have it open for name reservation from 27 October (Blizzard, 22 Oct 2026). The game describes it as the Roleplaying ruleset's naming and behaviour rules plus open-world PvP: "you are almost always at risk of being attacked by opposing players".
- Hardcore: death has lasting consequences. It arrives sometime after launch (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026) (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026).
Rules for the RP rulesets
Blizzard hasn't published naming or behaviour rules for the Roleplaying or Roleplay-PvP rulesets yet: its ruleset article describes each in one sentence (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026) (Blizzard, 22 Oct 2026). Until it does, the game's own description (strict naming conventions and behaviour rules) is the best guide, and our RP guide covers names, languages and emotes. We'll add Blizzard's rules here as soon as they're posted.
Who you can play with
- You group, run dungeons and raid with players who chose the same ruleset. Cross-ruleset grouping isn't supported (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026).
- Battlegrounds may include players from other rulesets, except Hardcore, which stays separate (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026).
- On the PvP ruleset you can only make characters of one faction: after your first Alliance character there, you can't make a Horde one, and the other way round. On Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore you can play both factions (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026).
- Blizzard hasn't said yet whether Roleplay-PvP has the one-faction rule too.
Faction balance
Blizzard says faction balance remains an important consideration for PvP. It plans systems to keep the two factions' numbers closer, as in Season of Discovery, where new character creation could be temporarily limited for a faction (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026).
Moving between rulesets
To play on another ruleset you make a new character there. Hardcore will be fully enclosed, but a Hardcore character who dies can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026).
Collections and Legacy Points are shared across rulesets. Hardcore works differently: progress, collections and rewards earned there can become available elsewhere, but progress from other rulesets doesn't carry into Hardcore (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026).
Language
You set a preferred online language under Options, Languages and Social. It's an account-wide setting for all your characters, with a 24-hour cooldown before you can change it again (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026).
Servers and data centers
Blizzard's ruleset article doesn't name regions, data centers or server locations, so we don't either. Names are unique per region (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026). During the beta, Blizzard has posted about EU routing problems and fixes (Blizzard, 21 Sep 2026); the server status page checks the login server every minute.
Questions and answers
Can I play with friends on a different ruleset?
Not in groups, dungeons or raids: cross-ruleset grouping isn't supported. Battlegrounds may mix rulesets, except Hardcore.
Is there an RP-PvP ruleset in WoW Forever?
Yes, from launch on 4 November. Blizzard added the Roleplay-PvP ruleset on 22 October and said it was working to have it open for name reservation from 27 October.
What are the rules on the RP and RP-PvP rulesets?
Blizzard hasn't published them yet. The game describes both as having strict naming conventions and behaviour rules, and RP-PvP adds open-world PvP. We'll add Blizzard's rules as soon as they're posted.
When does Hardcore come to WoW Forever?
Sometime after launch. Blizzard hasn't given a date.
Can I have Alliance and Horde characters on the PvP ruleset?
No. On PvP you can only make characters of one faction. On Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore you can play both, and Blizzard hasn't said yet for Roleplay-PvP.
Can character creation be closed for one faction?
For a while, possibly. Blizzard plans faction balance systems for PvP like Season of Discovery's, where new character creation could be temporarily limited for a faction.
