Other classes: Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, Warlock, Druid
Mages are pure ranged casters with strong AoE, crowd control and burst. Forever adds Arcane Blast (an Arcane talent: each cast stacks spell damage from your Intellect), Ice Lance (a Frost talent: 200% more damage on frozen targets), Frost Blast (a trainer spell at 24: a quick, cheap slow) and Frostfire Bolt (a trainer spell at 40: a frost and fire hybrid bolt with a DoT and slow), plus Missile Barrage, Arcane Wrath, Heating Up and Fingers of Frost in the talent trees.
Arcane (Caster DPS)
Arcane in Forever is built around Arcane Blast, a tier 3 Arcane talent whose higher ranks come from the trainer: each cast stacks up to 4 times, giving you spell damage equal to 15% of your Intellect per stack for 15 sec while raising Arcane Blast's own mana cost. Build stacks, then cast Arcane Missiles while they last; Missile Barrage, a first-row talent, can make it free and twice as fast, and the new Arcane Wrath adds a heavy hit on a short cooldown. Arcane Power, Presence of Mind and Evocation drive burst and mana.
Fire (Caster DPS)
Fire stacks Improved Scorch and Ignite, turns crits and Fire Blasts into fast Pyroblasts with Heating Up (called Hot Streak earlier in the beta), and uses Combustion for burst. Forever's Frostfire Bolt is a level 40 Fire spell that counts as both frost and fire, checks the lower resistance and adds a DoT and slow; Improved Fireball speeds it up just like Fireball. Incineration, now in the first row, boosts Fire Blast and Scorch crit, and Ice Lance and Arcane Blast too.
Frost (Caster DPS)
Frost is the safe, mana-efficient spec with Frostbolt spam, shields and control. Forever's Ice Lance, a tier 3 Frost talent, deals 200% more damage to frozen targets and gains crit from Shatter, and Fingers of Frost lets it hit as if the target were frozen, so the shatter combo (freeze, then Ice Lance) is now a big part of both PvE trash and PvP. Winter's Chill now builds up your next Cone of Cold instead, and the new Frost Blast is a quick, cheap slow from level 24. Cold Snap resets your defensive and freeze cooldowns.
Tips & tricks: what ForeverDB learned
Arcane
Updated 31 October 2026 for build 1.60.1.70707 · From the DPS simulator, the game client
Learning from players: DPS. Collecting comparable fights before publishing observed cast patterns.
Observed cast patterns, not a proven optimal rotation. Gear, buffs, healing assignments and incoming damage can explain performance differences. HPS is effective healing; overhealing does not increase it. HPS counts effective healing, APS counts recorded shield absorption, and EHPS is their combined rate. Shield application sizes and overhealing do not increase EHPS. Healing assignments and incoming damage still limit healer comparisons. Build groups use the version reported by the log; some logs omit the hotfix build number.

Common questions
What's the best caster ring for a Mage at level 20?
Speculation: Calling it the best rests on ForeverDB's gear scoring, not Blizzard, and other rings may suit depending on spec and what you can obtain.
A strong caster ring for a level 20 Mage is Lorekeeper's Ring, a rare ring usable from level 18. It gives +2 Stamina, +5 Spell Power and restores 2 mana every 5 seconds.
The +5 Spell Power is the draw: it lifts Fireball, Frostbolt and Arcane Missiles at a level where spell power is hard to come by. See the Mage class page for the rest of a level 20 caster set.
