Mobalytics' five fun specs for WoW Forever, checked against the client

The Felwood map from the WoW Forever client

· ForeverDB

Mobalytics picks five specs they enjoyed in the beta: Feral Druid, Protection Warrior, Survival Hunter, Frost Mage and Enhancement Shaman. Most of the abilities and talents they name are in the client, which fills in the levels and numbers. Only the rage claim lives on the server, so we flag that; the Mage teleports and the Enhancement Shaman abilities are in the client.

This is a community video by Mobalytics, not a Blizzard post. Everything in it is the creator's opinion or finding, so we write "Mobalytics says" and check each named ability against the WoW Forever beta client (build 1.60.1.70450). Beta data can change before launch.

With the beta's level cap at 30 and the testing window closing, Mobalytics picked five specs they had the most fun with: Feral Druid, Protection Warrior, Survival Hunter, Frost Mage and Enhancement Shaman. They call it "a mixture of my opinion and the overall vibe of the specs so far", a vibe list rather than a tier list. Most of the abilities and talents they name are in the client, and the client fills in the levels and numbers. A few claims sit on the server or aren't in our data yet, so we flag those.

The short version

  • Mobalytics shows five specs they found fun in the beta. It's their opinion, not a ranking.
  • The Druid form progression lines up with the client: Bear Form from a quest at level 10, Cat Form from a quest at level 20, Travel Form from the trainer at level 30.
  • Survival Hunter's two new melee talents are real: Strider Kick at level 30 and Lacerating Strikes at level 40, which is above the beta's level 30 cap.
  • Frost Mage's Fingers of Frost and Ice Lance are new talents in the Forever Frost tree, at levels 30 and 20.
  • We can't check the Warrior rage claim, which the server works out. The Mage's level 20 city teleports and the Shaman's Windfury Weapon, Stormstrike and Maelstrom Weapon are all in the client.

Abilities and talents named in the video, against the WoW Forever beta client. Classic Era numbers are the "before" side only.

Feral Druid

Mobalytics played Feral Combat the most and levelled it to 30. They describe the form progression as the fun part: spam Wrath early, get Bear Form to pull packs with Thorns up and "spam swipe" with Swipe, then get Cat Form and "the spec feels alive". The client lines up and fills in the detail. Bear Form comes from a quest at level 10, Swipe from the trainer at level 16 and costs 20 Rage in Bear Form, and Cat Form comes from the quest The Great Cat Spirit at level 20, not from the trainer as in Classic Era. Travel Form, used for the "kiting" they mention, is a level 30 trainer skill that raises movement speed by 40%. The high skill ceiling and PvP juggling they praise are player experience, not something the client measures. See the Druid changes and talent calculator.

Protection Warrior

Mobalytics says Protection's appeal is rage: "now they can generate a lot more of it through blocking, dodging, and parrying", which you then "dump that rage on abilities like thunderclap and cleave". The client names the spell as two words, Thunder Clap, a level 6 trainer skill, and Cleave at level 20, both costing 20 Rage. One real change shows up on Thunder Clap: its cooldown is 6 sec in Forever instead of Classic Era's 4 sec, and it works in Battle Stance or Defensive Stance (Classic Era: Battle Stance only). How much rage blocking, dodging and parrying give is worked out by the server, so we can't check that part yet. See the Warrior changes and talent calculator.

Survival Hunter

This is the spec Mobalytics calls the most interesting, a "physical DPS hybrid". Two of the melee talents they name are new in Forever. Strider Kick is a Survival talent at level 30: a kick for 100% melee weapon damage that raises movement speed by 30% for 3 sec on an 8 sec cooldown, which matches "a melee attack that also increases your movement speed". Lacerating Strikes adds a bleed to Mongoose Bite worth 40% of that hit's damage over 21 sec, but it sits at Survival tier 7, level 40, above the beta's level 30 cap, so beta players can't reach it yet. Mongoose Bite itself is a level 16 skill that now requires a melee weapon. The "lonewolf" option is Lone Wolf, written as two words Lone Wolf, and it is a Marksmanship talent at level 20 that gives 20% more damage while you have no active pet, so a Survival hunter spends points across trees to take it. See the Survival Hunter simulator and Hunter changes.

Frost Mage

Mobalytics calls out Fingers of Frost and Ice Lance as the reason to play Frost, and both are new talents in Forever's Frost tree. Ice Lance is a tier 3 talent at level 20: an instant hit for 26 to 30 Frost damage that does 200% more to Frozen targets, matching the "instant casts that deal tons of damage" line. Fingers of Frost is a tier 5 talent at level 30; it gives your Chill effects a 15% chance to treat your next spell as if the target were Frozen. The mobility and control they list check out: Blink at level 20 teleports you 20 yards and frees you from stuns and immobilises, Frost Nova at level 10 freezes for up to 8 sec, and Polymorph at level 8. Frostbolt, the Frostbolt they want to "spam" less, is a level 4 skill. The level 20 teleport checks out: Teleport: Stormwind, Ironforge, Orgrimmar and Undercity are trainer spells at level 20. The "scrolls" they mention aren't in our data, so we can't check those. See the Frost Mage simulator and Mage changes.

Enhancement Shaman

Mobalytics' last pick leans on Windfury, Stormstrike "becoming available much earlier in the talent tree" with a reduced cooldown, and Maelstrom Weapon building stacks that cut Lightning Bolt's cast time and mana cost. The client backs most of it. Windfury Weapon Windfury Weapon is a level 30 trainer spell, Stormstrike Stormstrike is an Enhancement tier 4 talent at level 25 (tier 7, level 40, in Classic Era) with an 8 sec cooldown, and Maelstrom Weapon Maelstrom Weapon is a new tier 6 talent at level 35, above the beta's cap, whose stacks cut your next Lightning Bolt's cast time and Mana cost. We haven't checked the two-handed weapon claim.

What we can't check yet

  • Rage from blocking, dodging and parrying for Protection Warrior: rage generation is a server formula, not in the client.
  • The Mage "scrolls": not in the data we have for this video.
  • The Enhancement Shaman two-handed weapon claim: we haven't checked it against the client yet.
  • PvP and duel performance (Feral's skill ceiling, Survival's dead zone, Frost staying dominant): player experience, not a client number.
