Mage in WoW Forever: what the datamine says is coming

· updated · ForeverDB
The WoW Forever client and Blizzard's posts show 2 new abilities and 38 new class items for Mages. We list them all and give our read on the class.
Speculation. This outlook is built from datamined WoW Forever client data (build 1.60.1.70707) and official Blizzard posts. The beta stopped at level 30; the game launches on 4 November with the whole of 1 to 60, and anything above level 30 is untested and can change.
What Blizzard's notes changed
Kaivax posted these Mage changes in WoW Forever Beta Development Notes – Updated October 15 on 16 October 2026:
- Frost Blast: This new spell is learned at level 24. It deals damage and slows the target’s movement by 40%. It has a 1.5 second cast time, and is affected by all talents that affect Frostbolt.
The purpose of this spell is to provide the functionality formerly granted by Rank 1 Frostbolt despite the penalization of “down-ranking”. It does have a higher Mana cost and deals a little more damage as well. Kaivax, WoW Forever Beta Development Notes – Updated October 15
Arcane
- Fixed an issue where Presence of Mind would not be consumed by spell casts.
- Fixed an issue where Missile Barrage could reduce the cost and duration of a second Arcane Missiles cast.
- Missile Barrage: This talent has moved to the first row and become a 2-point talent. It now also grants a chance for Arcane Missiles hits to trigger Missile Barrage.
- Arcane Blast: Redesigned. This spell is now a 1.5 second cast, and each time it is cast it grants the casting Mage 15% of their Intellect as additional Spell Damage. This effect also increases the cost of Arcane Blast as before and still stacks to 4 times. However, the effect now lasts 15 seconds from when it is first applied, instead of just until the next spell cast. Mana cost unchanged, but damage done and Spell Damage coefficients both reduced 40%.
- Arcane Wrath: New 16-point gold medal talent. This new spell deals base damage similar to Fireball, with a 3.5 second cast, but also deals damage as if the Mage had additional Spell Power equal to 5% of the Mage’s maximum Mana. 6 second cooldown.
Fire
- Heating Up is no longer consumed if the Mage also had Presence of Mind active for the Pyroblast cast. Heating up also always gains an additional charge each time the Mage casts Fire Blast. This does mean Fire Blast critical strikes generate 2 charges.
- Wake of Fire: Talent reverted back to Improved Fire Blast and no longer grants a bonus when the Mage kills a target. It also now increases the range of Fireblast by 8/15 yards.
- Critical Mass: Mages can now spend up to 5 points in this talent for 10% total critical strike increase.
- Fire Power: Redesigned. Now only 3 talent points. Increases damage done by Fire spells by 1/2/3% per the Mage’s Fire effects on the target, up to a maximum increase of 12%. Spells that mix multiple schools of magic do not grant this bonus.
Specifically, the effects which can grant increased Fire damage from this talent are Ignite, Improved Scorch, Fireball, and Pyroblast, and Impact. Frostfire Bolt does not grant the damage increase but can benefit from it. Kaivax, WoW Forever Beta Development Notes – Updated October 15
- Frost Channeling now correctly reduces the Mage’s threat.
- Fixed an issue where Ice Block was too transparent.
- Fixed various issues around Clearcasting. Clearingcast now correctly does not roll for every target struck by a spell. Clearcasting no longer has a chance to activate off of Dampen Magic and Amplify Magic. Clearcasting no longer has a chance to be activated by abilities cast when not in combat.
Frost
- Fixed an issue preventing Frostbite and Fingers of Frost from activating from your Ice Armor and Frost Armor spells.
- Ice Lance damage against Frozen targets changed to a 200% increase (Was 300%).
- Cone of Cold: Movement speed of the first 4 targets hit is decreased by an additional 10% and the slow lasts an additional 3 seconds on those targets.
The ability of this spell to control massive number of targets was the primary reason it was previously reduced in effectiveness and duration. It feels reasonable to let it retain this level of power when used against 4 or fewer targets. Kaivax, WoW Forever Beta Development Notes – Updated October 15
- Winter’s Chill: Redesigned. No longer increases critical strike chance. Instead, it causes Cone of Cold to deal 40% increase damage per stack of Winter’s Chill on the target, consumed by next Cone of Cold.
- Slightly changed the positioning of the spell visual for Cone of Cold.
- New spell Frost Blast. 1.5 second cast. Deals low frost damage. Slows/chills. Benefits from talents that benefit Frostbolt.
- Winter’s Chill change to: Gives your Frostbolt, Frost Blast, and Fingers of Frost empowered Ice Lance spells a 20/40/60/80/100% chance to apply Winter’s Chill, increasing the target’s damage taken from your next Cone of Cold by 5% and it gains an additional 7% of your spell damage, stacking up to 5 times.
New abilities in the client
These 2 Mage abilities are in the Forever client but not in Classic Era, with what rank 1 does:
- Frostfire Bolt (level 40, above the level 30 cap, a former Season of Discovery rune that's now a class ability). Rank 1: Launches a bolt of frostfire at the enemy, causing 92 to 108 Frostfire damage, slowing movement speed by 40% and causing an additional 27 Frostfire damage over 9 sec. It has 3 ranks, the last at level 60.
- Teleport: Dalaran (level 50, above the level 30 cap). Rank 1: Teleports the caster to Dalaran.
What levels 31 to 40 bring
The beta stopped at level 30. WoW Forever launches on 4 November with the whole game to level 60, and this is what the client has for the next ten levels, 31 to 40.
- Talent points go from 21 to 31, which opens talent tier 7 of a tree (up from tier 5).
- Abilities first trained between levels 31 and 40: Mage Armor (34), Conjure Mana Jade (38), Frostfire Bolt (40), Portal: Ironforge (40), Portal: Orgrimmar (40), Portal: Stormwind (40), Portal: Undercity (40).
- 22 higher ranks of existing abilities also become trainable in that range.
- Talents that come into reach include Fire Power, Combustion, Winter's Chill, Ice Barrier, Arcane Power, Arcane Instability.

- Arcane: Arcane Wrath.

Our read (speculation)
Mages get their signature Forever spells early. Arcane Blast and Ice Lance, both former Season of Discovery runes, are talents at 20: each sits in the third row of its section, teaches rank 1 and leaves the higher ranks to the trainer, so a level 20 Mage picks one or the other. The trees are built around them: Incineration raises their crit chance, and Improved Fireball also speeds up Frostfire Bolt, which arrives at 40. The level 30 cap adds Cone of Cold and brings into reach Shatter (three ranks, up to 50% more crit on Frozen targets) and Fingers of Frost, another former rune, now in the Frost section's fifth row. Ice Lance deals far more damage to Frozen targets, so Frost gets its freeze-and-shatter play well before 40. Coldflame Saber, a Mage-only sword at level 21 that adds Fire damage to melee hits on Frozen targets, plays on the same idea.
The Fire changes in the 24 September notes were about levelling pace. Wake of Fire's buff went up to 30 seconds because, as Blizzard explained, Mages have to restore mana between fights. A later build reverted the talent to Improved Fire Blast, which drops the after-kill bonus and gives Fire Blast up to 15 more yards of range instead. The notes also made Hot Streak (renamed Heating Up on 1 October) last longer and stopped Ignite double-dipping on damage bonuses. The 13 coefficient changes point the same way: early Fireball, Frostbolt and Fire Blast ranks now scale far better from spell power. With the Deep Dive recap promising spell power on caster levelling weapons, low ranks should keep pace with gear and make sensible downranking picks.
In the client's talent tree, Heating Up is a fourth-row Fire talent that needs Pyroblast and makes each Fireball, Fire Blast or Scorch crit shorten your next Pyroblast, and the current client adds a stack every time Fire Blast deals damage. Missile Barrage, another former rune, is now in the Arcane section's first row. The current client also adds Arcane Wrath, a fourth-row Arcane talent that needs Arcane Blast, and Frost Blast, a quick slowing Frost spell from level 24. Teleport: Dalaran comes at level 50. Blizzard has named the City of Dalaran (levels 28 to 33, in Alterac Mountains) as one of Forever's new dungeons, but hasn't explained the teleport. Arcane Missiles now checks line of sight only when the channel starts. For race choice, Orcs and Alliance-aligned Skyborne can now be Mages.
